In ancient Rome, “Rudis” was the sword that gladiators used in their training fights. It was made of wood because it wasn't supposed to hurt. Nevertheless, “Rudis” was also a symbol of freedom. The gladiator received it as a gift after proving himself worthy through victorious battles and being freed from his slave status.
